The Story That Almost Got Deleted

Posted in

This story has been on my mind since FOREVER. It was decomposing away in my Drafts Folder that I almost decided to delete it today. I thought I’d give it one last read (we writers are a self-absorbed kind) before pressing the keyboard key that would damn it to the recesses of the Recycle Bin.
But as I read it again, I ended up thinking that it deserved a better fate than the Recycle Bin. So it ended up on the blog.

Five 'Amreekan' Things Every ‘Virgin’ NRI is Bound to Have in Common

1. If you have been to the United States before the advent of broadband in India, then you have definitely indulged in
this - some serious open-mouthed respect for how fast Internet is in USA.

Confessions of a Fearless Palate

When I think about packaged food in India, my mind automatically conjures up images of cold tetraPaks of mango Frooti (fresh and juicy), packets of crunchy Kurkure (can never have enough of Kurkure, can you?) and rows of instant flour mixes pledging loyalty to India’s long standing tradition of hearty carb-filled breakfasts.
The Singaporean supermarkets however have a different story to tell. And I, being the eternal experimenter of all things strange and wonderful, bring you the lowdown on what’s hitting the aisles at our local stores.

Five Improbable Facebook Pages Which Made it to The Top

Since Facebook has no limits on the number of people creating pages on it, you’ll be surprised at the ‘rich’ variety of pages available online. Even more surprising are the number of likes these pages are getting.

I have collated 5 such random pages from my quick few minutes of dedicated FB-surfing everyday (in between gulps of air from peeking into too many friends of friends albums).

Here they are in descending order of likes per page:

Mommy, what is a Chicken?

At age five, I had gotten my first memorable mosquito bite. On a vacation back at India. The perpetrator had done a fine job on my wrist and the result was a big, red and ugly patch of raised skin. And in some remote part of my thoughts, I had thought it was the onset of some unmentionable skin disease. That is the day I met the average Indian’s lifelong enemy – the mosquito.

A Mosquito’s Tale – from Transylvania to India

Recent studies have shown that the blood-sucking mosquitoes are the descendants of the blood-sucking vampires. Hmmm…makes sense yeah?
They began their origin in the tale-worthy lands of Transylvania but evolved over time, ditching the scary teeth and flowing capes and adapting a smaller, less conspicuous look.
They travelled far and wide to find a wonderful land to settle down in. And what do you know, India fitted the bill perfectly. It was indeed love at first bite!

Week in a Life of a Vegetarian

Vegetarianism is as foreign a concept to me as Buddhism or Narcissism. Ok I might have exaggerated about the Narcissism. I am quite familiarised with it. I practice it daily in front of any reflective surface. Mirrors, Car windows, Lift walls -  no surface is spared :)
So coming back to vegetarianism. A noble and healthy option, although probably not a very wise option all the time.

1. If you have never stared at anyone but yourself in the mirror before, you will start now.
A chubby face with a toothless smile makes up for a real distracting mirror reflection.

2. If you have never watched a person sleep before, you will start now.
Babies sleep the sleep of the carefree with no alarms, no deadlines and no to-do’s to hound them in their dreams.
