Now that recession has truly bitten sharp and deep, 14th February saw lovers sneaking a look at their wallets every time Cupid wasn't looking. Which was pretty often, as a matter of fact. Because Cupid is not recession-proof himself, his arrows simply didn't puncture the gloom-bubble economy this year. Next year maybe, Cupid beatifically smiles, arrows crossed.
It doesn't mean that our recession-friendly Valentines were short of romance, however. Lovers manage, somehow, anyhow. In fact, some even argue that lovers manage much better during recession, as shrunk credit miraculously makes the heart large on imagination, releasing those happy endorphins by the dozen. So the New-age He discovers that baking cookies for her drives her wild, the custom BMW can wait till Wall Street rises up again. The New-age She discovers that a long sexy massage revs him up faster than a Louis Vuitton. Period. And one rose has the same effect on a woman as do a thousand. Well, it was said by Scrooge when he was a red-hot yet stingy loverboy, but it hold good for our recession Valentines also.
Jokes apart, when cash dries up, lovers rain more of their true selves on each other to keep themselves going. Its extremely hard at first. We've forgotten how to love without over-the-counter aphrosidiacs in glitzy retail spaces. Tiffany's replaced Touch the first time we got promoted. Now that the Corporate Squeeze has well and truly happened, we feel that our partners wouldn't value our plain old hugs. Thankfully that's bullshit in 90% of cases, give or take a little. Everyone will agree we're better off without mercenary partners anyway, even if sex was beyond-the-best.
So now we are, minus the giddy frills, showing our own true selves (and in some cases, our pink slips) to our partners. We're on unsure ground initially. But oh bliss! We've touched base with the people we love. And suddenly, we're flying hand in hand and it doesn't cost one damn cent!
All things considered, recession seems to be the best thing to have happened to love in a long time.

When we look beyond the over the counter aphrosidiacs life is much more beautiful.
