Heroine – Madhur Bhandarkar’s Next Box-Office Winner?

Posted in

If the first promos of Madhur Bhandarkar's to –be-released Bollywood movie, Heroine, are anything to go by, this is one movie, which is surely going to be worth the wait. Leading lady, Kareena Kapoor, looks her prettiest best, and yes delicious too, especially since she is thankfully not in her size-zero avatar; Kareena Kapoor exudes sexiness and attitude. Not convinced with what I say? Watch the promos, if you still have not!

For those wondering, why I am gushing about a movie which is scheduled to release in the 3rd week of September as of now, and not talking about what is currently on this week, which is Ekta Kapoor’s Kya Super Kool Hain Hum; well the lest said about it, the better it is. The movie promos of Kya Super Kool, which were crass and very obscene, were enough to put me off. Oh, don’t get me wrong, I am no prude, but I am sure you will agree that there is a fine distinction between being classy and being crass. Gross double-meaning dialogues just do not work for me.

Now coming back to Heroine, this movie from the very beginning has generated a lot of newsprint, thanks to the ouster of none other than Aishwarya Rai Bachchan due to her sudden pregnancy. For those not in the know, the filming for the movie initially had begun with Aishwarya, and in fact Bhandarkar made the official announcement of the movie with Aishwarya in the lead at Cannes. But, that is now old news, and a lot of water has flown under the bridge since then. Post the first look of the promos, one wonders, if Aishwarya would have been as good as Kareena Personally, I cannot imagine anyone other than Kareena essaying the role of a diva and superstar.

The official press release, which accompanied the announcement at Cannes, stated: “The film is based on the life and times of a superstar heroine, Mahi from the dream factory we call 'Bollywood'. The film is a daring, shocking, glamorous, scandalous behind-the-scenes account of the reality behind the world of glitz and glamour that our film stars inhabit. For a country obsessed with films and film stars, Heroine will take audiences on a voyeuristic journey to see what really goes on in the lives of India's sweethearts”. Now, this press release sure revs up my sense of anticipation for the movie! And considering it is none other than national award-winning Madhur Bhandarkar who is directing the movie, one can safely assume that this too would be winner like some of his other movies like Chandani Bar, Page 3 or Fashion.

Known to make movies, which promise to give viewers a peek into the world that Madhur makes his movies on, Heroine would be no different. In a recent interview with a TV channel, Madhur has said that the movie is 70 percent realistic and 30 percent fiction, and not based on one particular person. According to the director, with this movie he wants to portray today's film industry and its rise and fall.

Apart from Kareena, the cast includes Randeep Hooda, Arjun Rampal, Mugdha Godse, the yesteryear’s dancingdiva Helen, sultry Shahana Goswami and the very talented Lillete Dubey: one hell of a combination of support actors.

While, the song, ‘life ki ye naughty kahani, ye halkat jawani’ already seems to be climbing the popularity charts at a furious pace, the eyeball grabbing dialogue from the movie surely is, “ek randi ke chaar yaar... ek andar, ek bahar, teesra bimaar, toh chautha taiyaar”! Ha! Ha! Can’t imagine, in which circumstances in the movie this dialogue has been said, guess, one has to just wait it out till September to know.
